Ghetto Fabulous

By: Ungenita Katrina Prevost

Procrastination and perfectionism often go hand in hand. Do you put things off because they’re never good enough? If you spend all your time trying to make things perfect, it’s no surprise they NEVER get done. It’s said that successful people fail more than unsuccessful people. Why do I think it’s important? You can learn from your mistakes. You can correct your mistakes. When you’re starting something you might have to get through those awkward stages and it might seem “Ghetto” but if you stay the course and work to refine it, correct it & polish it, it can end up being darn “Fabulous”.

Growing up in the gritty Iberville projects in New Orleans gave me the proper credentials to be called “Ghetto Fabulous” but I thought it would now be an appropriate time to update the definition of “Ghetto Fabul ous”. Frankly, it needed a makeover. It is said that “Ghetto Fabulous” is a stereotype of lower income urban America.

I think “Ghetto Fabulous” is someone that strives for excellence versus perfection. Someone that is willing to take risks and are not afraid of messing up or making mistakes during the process. You are definitely not worried about what other people think. You are living your life fully flawed & all. You see when you’re “Ghetto Fabulous” you have a vision of where you’d like to be & don’t allow where you’re at today to hold you back.
Your time is now to be a little ghetto…

What does being ghetto have to do with your business? Well for starters no matter what’s going on in your business. It’s important you do what you can; in the place you are right now and with what you have. If I could have a dollar for every time someone said I would if…I’d be a Billion Dollar Beauty already. I see so many business owners that want everything to be perfect before they push forward. It’s time to get over that you won’t look perfect and there is no such thing as a perfect business. Even those businesses that you think are. I’m sure if you peeled back the curtain or gained a backstage pass you’d see some things that you might deem “Ghetto” (Not perfect). Does it matter? Absolutely not!

Here’s a great quote if you are suffering from a severe case of procrastination & perfectionism. “Winners take imperfect action while losers are still perfecting the plan.”

I know I can’t be perfect but I can be excellent. Excellence is not the same as perfection. Perfection is not attainable, and chasing it is pointless. However you can be excellent exactly where you are right now. That’s right you can go the extra mile & strive for excellence now. Essentially you work with what you’ve got & make the most of it until you can do better or it gets better. The more you do, the better you get but if you’re not taking the necessary steps you’re not giving yourself the chance of getting better & being extraordinary. That’s “Ghetto Fabulous”!

Excellence is better than perfection…

Please do me a favor & save the excuses. It doesn’t matter how humble your beginnings are. I grew up in the projects where the average house hold income was less than $15,000.00. My father told me to start in your own backyard. To this day I’m not afraid to start & I make sure I finish what I start. Every time I make a mistake something amazing happens. I get better and I’m led to something better. Risk brings rewards. How did my journey lead here? I took risks, I took action & I took the losses that came along with it. If I didn’t I wouldn’t be where I’m at today. Imperfect action is much better than no action at all.
