Ungenita Features Today:The Joy of Eyelashes

January 13th, 2012

Joy A. Johnson has her late mother to thank when it comes to the inspiration that developed both her Faces of Joy Makeup Artistry business (est. 2008) and Nails of Joy (est. 2010). As a result of starting her businesses she has participated in numerous events such as the prestigious Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week for several seasons, and represented Lancôme, Nars and Cover Girl Cosmetics. Her passion to help guide others catapulted serving as an International Educator for American International Industries for such brands as Ardell Lashes and China Glaze Nail Lacquer.

As an Ardell Educator, she’s been known to say, “I literally travel the world teaching people about the wonderful world of lashes and I love it.” Her classes are technique/application focused leaving you with the confidence that you are learning from the best. She’s even been asked to go overseas to countries such as Turkey and Lebanon. In addition to representing Ardell as an Educator, she also teaches “Learning the Lash Business” at her Education Studio in Waldorf, MD. In addition Joy’s consulting business Lashes of Joy trains salon staff, assists with menu development, helps create a Lash Department, and teaches owners/managers how an Eyelash Dept. within your salon can increase your bottom line. She is currently working on a 10 city tour for 2012/2013. If your salon is interested in scheduling Joy for her training and development services please email requests to BookJoy@NailsFacesofJoy.com.

As of January 1, 2012 Mrs. Johnson opened her own Nails :: Makeup :: Lashes :: Education Studio in Waldorf, MD. Liz Pabón From Beauty Black Book Wants You To Pay Attention To The Signs…

December 13th, 2011

Stop, Yield, Glam: Is Your Style Signpost Costing You or Growing Your Business
by Liz Pabón

Signposts.  They serve as indicators of where we’ve been and where we’re going.  They offer us direction and information about the best choices to make.

Take for instance a stop sign.  We know that a red octagonal sign with white lettering is our queue to stop what we’re doing.  Or when we see an inverted triangle we know we’re being cautioned to stop if necessary.

In business, the signs aren’t as obviously posted but they do exist.

Like the unspoken sign that says underpinnings should be well concealed.  A bra strap that’s slipped off the shoulder can be viewed as quietly seductive or blatantly careless.

Or the play wear is for playtime sign.  If you wear it on days off to pick up the kids, the mail or the dogs, it may be best not to wear it in a work setting.  This is one of those instances where work and play don’t mix.

And then there’s the no Mimi Bobeck zone which basically says if it looks, sounds or smells like a costume, it’s best to reserve it for a more festive occasion or on-stage performance.  In a work setting too much can be viewed as well, too much.

It takes something like 3-seconds for a prospective client to decide if you’re in or if you’re out so how you present yourself is important to your bottom line success.

Jacket shapes and color palettes aside, there are a few important questions and principles to consider as you’re dressing for a work setting:

  1. After putting yourself in your audiences shoes, will how you’re presenting yourself instill confidence?  You may believe your expensive LuLu Lemon yoga pants are stylish but they may be perceived as much too playful and you as not taking your job (and their needs) seriously.  Managing perceptions is key.
  2. How are you expected to look?  As a tie-in to #1, if you’re not sure what your audience expects from you it’s possible you don’t know your audience well yet.  Keep working on understanding even their most subtle nuances in order to know what they need and expect from you.  And if you find their expectations too tall an order, you might have an audience mismatch.
  3. Is your appearance elevated 1-2 notches above or below them?  Ideally, strive to style yourself 1-2 notches above your audience.  They will look at what you’re wearing and how you’re wearing it and decide if you represent what they want to achieve (it’s human nature to want to rise to a higher level) so give them a reason to choose you as their fairy glam mother (or father).

Express yourself, be creative and remember that your style signpost indicates to others what direction they should take and what they should expect from you.  You won’t get any fashion police citations or fees for not following these principles but you could lose potential business.

Set yourself up for success and happy styling!

MySkin Analyzed Ungenita Prevost’s Skin

December 12th, 2011

The Verdict is in…

I have good skin, my pores are small and I’m aging at a snail’s pace (not the best choice of words but I think you get the point). My birthday was last week and someone said I’m timeless. Sounds great to me!

While speaking at The Beauty Party in New York back in April of 2011, I had the pleasure of meeting the representatives from MySkin. If you haven’t heard of MySkin, and you LOVE YOUR SKIN get ready to makeover your beauty regimen. Their advanced technology analyzes your skin in minutes and gives you a 100% assessment of YOUR skin.

Beauty is Skin Deep

You see for years, we have assumed what type of skin we have. As a Trained Aesthetician you may not always get an accurate assessment under the lights when you get a facial. I’ve been told I have oily skin and normal skin. Guess what, my skin is actually combination! I still seek expert advice. I care about my skin and I take care of my skin, no ifs, ands or buts about it. Let’s face it; your skin is the largest organ in your body. Do you know what’s really going on with the dermis and the epidermis?

How many products have you bought that sit on your vanity ½ empty? MySkin’s mission is to provide you with the information and tools to help you make better decisions about your skin. Once you know your “Skin Type” you can check out what products are perfect for you AND to top it off, they’re keeping it simple and chic!

The Cost of Beauty

How much money would you have in the bank today if you didn’t waste it on “Fancy Schmancy” skin care products that didn’t work? Let’s face it; some products (I won’t name brands) fail to deliver the results YOU want.

With a background in skin care I have tried more than my share of skin care products and for the most part. I think most products work but they don’t always work on everyone. I’ll admit I’m guilty of falling for the latest and the greatest claim. With MySkin you can take control of your beauty regimen and ensure that your “skin’s success” is skin deep!

The ultimate source of unbiased advice

Analyze your skin, find what products and routines work for you, and connect with your SkinTwins™.

A REFRESHING NEW WAY TO FIND EFFECTIVE SKINCARE PRODUCTS THAT WORK FOR YOU!

As a Beauty Expert I sample new products regularly but at the end of the day, I know what works for my skin. If you’d like to get the facts about your skin so you can buy the most effective products for YOUR skin type, please visit MySkin’s site http://www.myskin.com/

Thanks MySkin for analyzing “My Skin”!!!!!!!!!

Dress Up Your Business

December 6th, 2011

Imagine a business that is essentially YOU!

Today, more than ever you can experience the energy and excitement of “Being YOU For A Living”!

The minute you open your doors for business, you’re telling the world, I have something to sell that I want you to buy. How are they going to notice you? Are you truly standing out from the competition?

Are you dressing the part when it comes to your business?

You have a style of your own but how would you describe your business? Close the door on the chaos in the outside world and turn within to discover what essence you wish to convey with your business. Like a piece of jewelry exquisitely crafted, it’s YOUR boutique, why not take the style and pizzazz from your wardrobe and bring it to work!

Classic
Contemporary
Modern
Trendy
Traditional
Romantic
Elegant
Sexy
Chic
Sporty

My theory, your business should be a reflection of YOU and can generate buzz if you dress it up. You’re probably wondering what YOU can do to “Dress Up Your Business”!

Every morning when you wake up, if you haven’t put together your outfit the night before you have to decide what you’re going to wear. If you are a true “Fashionista” you know what not to wear.

You make the choice everyday to look shabby or chic. You understand there are many elements: the clothes, shoes, accessories, jewelry etc. that pull your look together. You know when you’re “dressed to the nines” but are you “dressed to the nines” in your business?

Here are 3 ways you can “Dress Up Your Business…

1. If you’re not sold, how can you expect anyone else to buy? The true value of your business shows up every time you interact with a customer. There are so many styles of selling but it’s important that you tailor it to your target audience, while maintaining the essence of YOU. “Be the designer label your customers want to buy”,a tres chic way to “Dress Up Your Business”.

2. If you love to window shop, I highly recommend you do when it comes to your brand. Look at why some brands stand out in style, while others never make it to the “What’s Hot List”. Dress up your business with a recognizable brand and your business will be the talk of the town every season.

3. It might be time to makeover your marketing. How are you promoting yourself? Is it shabby or chic? Look at your marketing materials like accessories. Brochures, Newsletters, Business Cards, Store Signs, Postcards etc. are all ways you can “Dress Up Your Business” with a stellar marketing strategy that pulls your target audience to YOU versus pushes them away. Indulge in the right elements so it’s extraordinary!

If you’ve ever splurged on your wardrobe, I recommend you splurge for work! Give the same attention and detail to your business. When your business is successful, you’ll be able to “shop til you drop”!!!!!

You can successfully navigate your way around the doom & gloom in the world today, aka “The Recession” when you dress the part!!!!!

Do you feel stuck right now, building your Beauty/Fashion business? Would you like more support, referrals & resources? If you want to work in the Glamorous beauty industry, own a profitable business or begin a career in the exciting field of fashion it starts with a plan, a plan to learn how to effectively market your products and services and increase your sales so your brand stands out in style! Today is the day to makeover your business and re-design your life. I invite you to experience a Business Curriculum like none other via my Hot & Sexy Mentorship for the Female Entrepreneur who wants to look sexy, feel beautiful and increase their bank account. I want to mentor you & show you how to make jaw-dropping leaps in your life & business NOW! Meet One Of Ungenita’s Clients NYC Makeup Artist Jacqueline Menconi

November 28th, 2011

A Day in the Life of a Makeup Artist

Life as a freelance Makeup Artist is consistently inconsistent.

My schedule is always changing and evolving. I don’t have a set weekly routine, the luxury of a steady paycheck is just a memory. I can go a week without working followed by 5 weeks without a single day off. Life as a freelance Makeup Artist is consistently inconsistent… and I love it.

Although I have been working with makeup since I was a child (thanks to Mommy), I first started my professional career as a “full time” freelancer in November of 2010.  Before then, I had worked at Sephora followed by Saks Fifth Avenue… trying to take on as many photo & video shoots and bridal clients as possible on my designated days off.

Some of you might know that this career I have chosen to pursue in my late twenties was not AT ALL what I started out doing.  I went to college to become a Producer.  After graduating, I went on to work at CNBC, a smaller production agency, and then co-founded a creative media agency called Hybrid Interactive (who you should definitely hire to create any customized marketing materials because Heather and Jenn kick some serious ass).

Anyway… Through my experiences as a Producer, I was lucky enough to meet a handful of phenomenally talented Makeup Artists (Maryann Muro, Hector Ferrer, Lisa Bell, & Shannon Lauretta to name a few).  These MUAs hold a dear place in my heart, for they are the ones who inspired me to make what felt like “the change of a lifetime” (my lifetime) from producing to makeup. After that, it was off to makeup school in the big city (thanks Laura and Jeff for letting me crash at your apartment for a shorter commute)!

Nowadays, instead of sitting behind a desk and in front of a laptop doing “producery” things, I have the distinct pleasure of playing with colors and faces (and sometimes celebrities). Whether it be on a film, TV show, or industrial video shoot set… Or a photo shoot or back stage at a fashion show… Or in a bridal suite with 12 lovely ladies drinking their traditional mimosas waiting their turn for makeup (Yes, I’d love a mimosa but I’d rather get this lipstick on your LIPS!!)… OR even working the retail circuit for one of my favorite lines, Laura Mercier… I am a happy camper.

It’s true that making definite plans in advance is a thing of the past… It’s true that I get anxious if I’m not working a few days in a row… It’s true that I’m exhausted after a few weeks of working nonstop… It’s also true that I absolutely LOVE what I do. Do I still have massive student loans? Yes. Thanks for that, college. Do I have to pay extra for my health insurance? Sure do. Do I have normal people bills to pay? Obviously.

Guess what… I manage to pay all of my bills every month. “But Jacqueline, how do you do that without a steady paycheck?” I’m glad you asked… It’s because I work my butt off networking and following up with past clients. I also try to be smart with the money I have coming in and save as much of it as I can.

All of the uncertainty and anxiety is worth it. I get to do what I love to do on a daily basis.

Are you thinking of making a career change or taking the leap to freelance-hood? DO IT. But first… Call my girl Ungenita because she knows what’s up. She is the genius that helped me find this statement:  I am a Celebrity Makeup Artist specializing in production. A simple yet strong statement that has helped me gain more business in the last few months. Thank you Ungenita!!

The End.
